We are delighted that Fr. Edward Looney (Secretary of The Mariological Society of America) will give our February research seminar.
Theme
“At the Cross, her station keeping, stood the mournful mother weeping,” says the famous Lenten hymn poem the Stabat Mater. This hymn, along with stations of the cross meditations penned throughout the years, focus on Mary’s closeness to the passion of her son.
St. John recounts her presence at the foot of the cross and the command for the beloved disciple to behold his mother, which from that hour he took her into his home. Mystical revelations have influenced the passion narrative, enhancing the meditation of the Christian faithful. Mel Gibson’s iconic The Passion of the Christ was heavily influenced by the writings of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich and Venerable Maria of Agreda. Other saints, like St. Bridget of Sweden have added to the discourse of Christ’s passion.
Fr Looney’s presentation will explore poignant points for meditation from the mystics and draw out similarities and differences between their writings.
